Many adolescents today may respond to death anxiety by becoming masters and dispensers of death in their second life in violent video games. Then, during adolescence, death anxiety erupts in force: teenagers often become preoccupied with death a few consider suicide. The fear of death ordinarily goes underground from about six to puberty, the same years Freud designated as the period of latent sexuality. Sometimes adults attempt to find soothing words, or transfer the whole matter into the distant future, or soothe children’s anxiety with death-denying tales of resurrection, eternal life, heaven, and reunion. If they openly express their anxiety, their parents become noticeably uncomfortable and, of course, rush to offer comfort. Children may simply observe, wonder, and, following their parents’ example, remain silent. Children at an early age cannot help but note the glimmerings of mortality surrounding them-dead leaves, insects and pets, disappearing grandparents, grieving parents, endless acres of cemetery tombstones. My personal experience and clinical work have taught me that anxiety about dying waxes and wanes throughout the life cycle. in the discussion that follows, I often refer to these valuable ideas. To alleviate the fear of death, he developed several powerful thought experiments that have helped me personally face death anxiety and offer the tools I use to help my patients. And the root cause of misery? Epicurus believed it to be our omnipresent fear of death. The frightening vision of inevitable death, he said, interferes with one’s enjoyment of life and leaves no pleasure undisturbed. In his view, there was only one proper goal of philosophy: to alleviate human misery. But in historical reality, Epicurus did not advocate sensuous pleasure he was far more concerned with the attainment of tranquility (ataraxia).Įpicurus practiced “medical philosophy” and insisted that just as the doctor treats the body, the philosopher must treat the soul. Most people today are familiar with his name through the word epicure or epicurean, to signify a person devoted to refined sensuous enjoyment (especially good food and drink). He was born in the year 341 B.C.E., shortly after the death of Plato, and died in 270 B.C.E. The more I learn about this extraordinary Athenian thinker, the more strongly I recognize Epicurus as the proto-existential psychotherapist, and I will make use of his ideas throughout this work. Indeed, in my work as a therapist, I take as my intellectual ancestors not so much the great psychiatrists and psychologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-Pinel, Freud, Jung, Pavlov, Rorschach, and Skinner-but classical Greek philosophers, particularly Epicurus. As a psychotherapist treating many individuals struggling with death anxiety, I have found that ancient wisdom, particularly that of the ancient Greek philosophers, is thoroughly relevant today. For some of us the fear of death manifests only indirectly, either as generalized unrest or masqueraded as another psychological symptom other individuals experience an explicit and conscious stream of anxiety about death and for some of us the fear of death erupts into terror that negates all happiness and fulfillment.įor eons, thoughtful philosophers have attempted to dress the wound of mortality and to help us fashion lives of harmony and peace. As he feared death, so do we all-each and every man, woman, and child. When I die shall I not be like Enkidu? Sorrow enters my heart. Four thousand years ago, the Babylonian hero Gilgamesh reflected on the death of his friend Enkidu with the words from the epigraph above: “Thou hast become dark and cannot hear me. Mortality has haunted us from the beginning of history. Our existence is forever shadowed by the knowledge that we will grow, blossom, and, inevitably, diminish and die. But it comes with a costly price: the wound of mortality. Self-awareness is a supreme gift, a treasure as precious as life.

ENS-EBCH1 Epiphone Les Paul STANDARD Electric Guitar. SERIES 10 ELECTRIC GUI TAR SERIESYamaha Pacifica Series PAC112V Electric Guitar. The single cutaway design also adds some weight, in addition to the thick rounded neck and large headstock. This is due the the thick mahogany body, which is around 2.5 inches wide. Gibson Les Paul guitars weigh between 9-12 pounds (4-5.5 kg) making them one of the heaviest electric guitars available. You also get a maple cap on the body, making it heavier still. This is due to the mahogany body and neck, and also the dual humbucker pickups and tremolo bridge. The PRS Custom 24 weights roughly 9 pounds (4.1 kg). It has a thicker body than the Strat, and a heavier bridge. The Fender Jazzmaster weighs approximately 8.5 pounds (3.9 kg), so slightly more than a Strat or Tele. It does have a pretty thick rounded C-shape neck though, which definitely adds to the weight. The Gibson Flying V weight around 8 pounds (3.6 kg) on average.Īlthough the body isn’t too large, it is a touch thicker than the SG, at just over 1.5 inches. The hardware is pretty lightweight, as the single coil pickup and bridge design aren’t too heavy. It’s a fairly moderately sized electric guitar, with a light body (made of alder/ ash) and heavier neck (made of maple), giving it a pretty balanced weight. The Fender Telecaster weights 8 pounds (3.6 kg) on average. What makes them a touch heavier than you’d expect, is the maple neck and fretboard. Strats have a fairly lightweight body due to the alder/ ash tone wood, double cutaway design and contoured shape. This is the standard weight for most electric guitars. The Fender Stratocaster weights 8 pounds (3.6 kg) on average. The RG series has a pretty large scale length of 26.5 inches, which makes it a touch heavier than you’d expect for a normal double cutaway, slim body. This is primarily due to the slim body, and also the super thin neck. Ibanez guitars are pretty light, and this RG series is no different, weighing in at 7 pounds (3.2 kg). It is lightweight because it has a contoured double cutaway body, so there isn’t much that adds to the weight of this guitar. The Squier Stratocaster weighs 7 pounds (3.2 kg). The scale length is longer than the SG, at 25.5″, so it’s a bit larger, however, the single coil pickups are fairly dainty bridge keep it pretty lightweight. Most Squier Tele’s are made out of either alder or ash, and the cheaper models are made of basswood, which is very light. The main reason for this, is the tone wood. The Squier Telecaster weighs 6.5 pounds (2.9 kg) on average, making it a light-weight guitar. It also has a fairly short scale length of 24.75 inches, so it generally is a pretty small electric guitar. The width of an SG’s mahogany body is a touch under 1.5 inches. Well, first of all, it has a very thin body. The Gibson SG weighs 6 pounds (2.7 kg) on average, making it one of the lightest electric guitars available. Let’s go from heaviest to lightest, starting with the Gibson SG. I’ll go through the main models, and explain why they weight so much (or so little) and what this means for playability and tone. So we touched on the different weights of different models of electric guitars at the start of the article, but now let’s jump into a more detailed explanation. Take a look at this article I’ve written about the differences between semi-hollow and hollow body guitars to learn more about this topic. They do tend to sound warmer and more bassy than solid guitars, as they are more related to acoustic guitars. Hollow and semi-hollow guitars tend to suffer from feedback when you crank up the distortion or volume on your amp, due to the space behind the pickups. Solid body guitars have better sustain and less feedback than hollow designs. You’ll also remember that solid body guitars are heavier than semi-hollow and hollow guitars. This tends to give you a more resonant tone, with better sustain, because the vibrations caused by the strings take longer to disperse. Heavier guitars tend to have a fuller and warmer tone for this reason. Heavier guitars are usually heavier because they are made from thicker pieces of wood. So why does weight actually matter? Well, one of the main things that weight can affect, is the tone of the electric guitar. Well first off we need to know our system information, as not all of our systems are the the same. I had to reconnect after 10 to 15 minutes over and over again as I continue to get the dreaded CrashPlan Unable to Connect to Backup Engine. So how did that work for you? Any luck? Still getting the unable to connect to backup engine message? Well then, this is exactly what was happening to me which left me at a lost.I know your probably thinking that this is an easy response…and it is, however this can be at times the most simplest way to started again. Well I will stop beating around the bush and side step my backup strategy here and provide you information and commands on how I was able to get my data back. I have my existing external hard drive > a backup of that external drive > then a final backup in the cloud with CrashPlan. So your probably asking, well why would you backup 1 TB+ of data to the cloud knowing darn well that it could take X amount of time to pull all that data down? Well the honest answer is because the data in the cloud was my fail over (last stand) recovery plan. As you can imagine this process can be painstakingly daunting task especially when the recover of the data exceeds 1 TB+ of data. – Definition by TechTargetĭo you experience this happening when you try to recover from CrashPlan: Restore Running => Backup Disabled – not available => ∞įor over the past 6 months or so I have been attempting to recover an external hard drive that died BUT have backed up with CrashPlan. Therefore, it is important to be able to estimate the volume of the ECF compartment and the volume of fluid lost to initiate appropriate fluid replacement and monitor fluid therapy. Fluid losses often are treated using parenteral fluids, which initially enter the ECF. For example, in diarrhea, a large volume of gastrointestinal fluid is lost in renal failure, a large volume of ECF may be excreted. Fluid shifts that occur during changes in hydration can have a marked effect on the ECF, and in most disease states, loss of fluids occurs initially from the ECF. Note the marked concentration differences for many electrolytes.Īny fluid not contained inside a cell is in the extracellular fluid compartment (approximately one third of total body water). Intracellular homeostasis is maintained by shifts in water, solutes, and numerous other substances across the cell membrane.įigure 1-2 Average values for electrolyte concentrations in extracellular and intracellular fluid. The composition of ICF is very different from extracellular fluid (ECF) ( Fig. The intracellular fluid (ICF) compartment comprises approximately 40% of body weight (approximately two thirds of total body water). The second edition of this book contains a more detailed discussion of the techniques involved in determination of total body water and the amount of fluid in the various compartments.Īs shown in Figure 1-1, the largest volume of fluid in the body is inside cells. Data from these kinds of studies vary with the protocol used and thus provide only approximations of fluid compartment sizes in healthy awake animals. Studies of body fluid compartments often are performed in experimental animals that have been anesthetized, splenectomized, or nephrectomized. Results are expressed either as a percentage of body weight, which is easy to measure when calculating fluid therapy needs, or as a percentage of total body water, which is a useful conceptualization of body fluid compartments. The volume of fluid in each of these compartments has been estimated using various isotope or dye dilution techniques and calculating their volumes of distribution. Body fluids in each compartment equilibrate with fluids in other compartments by multiple mechanisms across a wide variety of membranes to maintain homeostasis. Water is the major component of all body fluids, which are distributed into several physically distinct compartments. Formulas for estimating lean body mass are based on the assumptions that (1) in normal small animal patients, approximately 20% of body weight is due to fat, (2) morbid obesity increases body fat to approximately 30% of body weight, and (3) body weight is a reasonable estimate of lean body mass in thin patients: 21 Because fat has a lower water content than lean tissue, fluid needs should be estimated on the basis of lean body mass to avoid overhydration, especially in patients with cardiac or renal insufficiency or in those with hypoproteinemia. 35 Total body water was approximately 70% of total body weight in racing Greyhounds, likely due to low body fat content. 13 Neonatal dogs and cats have higher total body water content (80% of body weight) than adults (60% of body weight), 30 and an age-related decrease in total body water has been described in puppies and kittens during the first 6 months of life. In humans, total body water decreases with age and is lower in women than in men. 56 There are some species and individual variations in total body water, likely related to age, sex, and body composition. 26, 59 Total body water of adult cats also was determined to be approximately 60%. Estimates of total body water in adult dogs that are neither very thin nor obese are 534 to 660 mL/kg. In health, approximately 60% of an adult animal’s body weight is water.

If the ghost is playing near the Music Box, it will become visible and go towards it. However, it can only be triggered once, and doing so without preparation is extremely dangerous since utilising it near a ghost can be fatal. Players can follow the sound of the singing to determine which room it is in. When you activate it, it will play a tune that the ghost will sing along to. Each item has a unique spawn point but can appear in several places on each map, therefore gamers hunting for a certain cursed item should first check its spawn locations. Because only one cursed object may exist per mission, players can fairly expect that no other cursed item will be in the region after one is discovered. When players start a contract, one of the six cursed goods will appear in the region. It’s about as easy as looking for the single blink of a firefly in the middle of a motorway, using only a handheld phone.”Ĭo-author Eamonn Kerins of the University of Manchester also comments, "Kepler has achieved what it was never designed to do, in providing further tentative evidence for the existence of a population of Earth-mass, free-floating planets. From that cacophony, we try to extract tiny, characteristic brightenings caused by planets, and we only have one chance to see a signal before it’s gone. Our observations pointed an elderly, ailing telescope with blurred vision at one the most densely crowded parts of the sky, where there are already thousands of bright stars that vary in brightness, and thousands of asteroids that skim across our field. Iain notes: “These signals are extremely difficult to find. This meant that new data reduction techniques had to be developed to look for signals within the Kepler dataset. Kepler was not designed to find planets using microlensing, nor to study the extremely dense star fields of the inner Galaxy. Roughly one out of every million stars in our Galaxy is visibly affected by microlensing at any given time, but only a few percent of these are expected to be caused by planets. This produces a short burst in brightness that can last from hours to a few days. Predicted by Albert Einstein 85 years ago as a consequence of his General Theory of Relativity, microlensing describes how the light from a background star can be temporarily magnified by the presence of other stars in the foreground. Such planets may perhaps have originally formed around a host star before being ejected by the gravitational tug of other, heavier planets in the system. These new events do not show an accompanying longer signal that might be expected from a host star, suggesting that these new events may be free-floating planets. However, the four shortest events are new discoveries that are consistent with planets of similar masses to Earth. Many of these had been previously seen in data obtained simultaneously from the ground. The study team found 27 short-duration candidate microlensing signals that varied over timescales of between an hour and 10 days. During this two-month campaign, Kepler monitored a crowded field of millions of stars near the centre of our Galaxy every 30 minutes in order to find rare gravitational microlensing events. The study, led by Iain McDonald of the University of Manchester, UK, (now based at the Open University, UK) used data obtained in 2016 during the K2 mission phase of NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope. The results include four new discoveries that are consistent with planets of similar masses to Earth, published today in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Tantalising evidence has been uncovered for a mysterious population of “free-floating” planets, planets that may be alone in deep space, unbound to any host star.
